A few frequently asked questions

What do I need to start driving lessons?

In order to start driving lessons, you must have a provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland. You must also be at least 17 years old (However, there is an exception for 16 year olds who have applied for, or receive,  the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment).

Do I need to pass the theory test before I start Lessons?

No,  you can start your lessons as soon as you have your provisional driving licence. However, you are encouraged to apply for your theory test at the earliest opportunity.

Can you assist me in studying for my theory test?

Yes, definitely! We will incorporate study into your practical driving lessons but further assistance can be offered, if required.

How often should I take lessons?

This is entirely your choice depending on your flexibility and availability. Weekly or bi-weekly  lessons provide a level of consistency that will aid effective progress.

How many lessons will I need?

How many lessons you need is very difficult to answer as it will depend on how quickly you learn and your level of prior experience, as well as the consistency of your lessons. On average, students take between 40-45 hours before being test ready.

Do you have a minimum lesson length?

The length of lessons can be flexible depending on your flexibility and availability. However, a minimum of 1½ hours is recommended.

When can I take my practical test?

There is no minimum number of lessons you must have or hours you must practise driving before sitting your practical driving test. However, before you are able to apply, you must have passed your theory test. We will provide you with advise on this as part of our learning programme.

Where will I take my practical test?

Again, this is entirely your choice! However, it is recommended you take your test at the practical driving test centre nearest to your home. If travel further afield is required, this can be discussed with your instructor.

Can you collect me from home, school or work?

The location of collection can be flexible to meet your needs provided the location is within an appropriate travelling distance.

Do you offer lessons in an automatic vehicle?

Currently, we only offer lessons in a manual vehicle. However, if students own their own automatic vehicle and it is appropriate for lessons, we can teach you in your car at a discounted rate.

I have my own car. Is it a good idea for my family members to take me out driving?

Absolutely! Any additional experience you can obtain is positively recommended. It will provide a great opportunity to put into practice what you have studied during lessons.

The family member supervising you must be over 21, be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in (for example they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car),  and they must have held their full driving licence for 3 years (from the UK, the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein).

Can I take my practical driving test with an overseas driving licence?

You must have a provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland to take your practical driving test.
